Abandoned but Not Defeated

Mala’s life began in tragedy. Born blind, she was abandoned in a dustbin at Jalgaon railway station, barely a few days old. Her survival seemed improbable, but a compassionate passerby rescued her and handed her over to a child welfare center. This act of kindness gave her a second chance at life.

She was later shifted to a home for the visually challenged in Amravati, Maharashtra. There, destiny introduced her to Shankar Baba Papalkar, a renowned social activist and recipient of the Padma Shri. Deeply moved by her condition and spirit, Shankar Baba adopted her as his daughter, giving her not just a name but a sense of identity, dignity, and purpose.

Nurturing the Mind: Education Against All Odds

Under Shankar Baba’s and her educators’ guidance, Mala developed a strong inclination towards academics. She learned Braille and began her formal education at Andh Apang Kalyan Kendra, a school designed for visually impaired children. Her early years were difficult, not only because of her disability but also due to the emotional toll of rejection and societal stigma.

But Mala was undeterred. She excelled in her studies and later graduated from Amravati University. Her hunger for knowledge didn’t stop there. She pursued and completed her Master’s degree in Political Science from the prestigious Government Vidarbha Institute of Science and Humanities, proving that no obstacle is insurmountable when armed with education and willpower.

The Battle for a Government Role

Like millions of aspirants across India, Mala dreamed of serving her country. But unlike most, her journey was steeper. Facing numerous rejections due to her disability, she often encountered institutional apathy. Even appearing for competitive exams as a visually impaired candidate brought logistical and psychological challenges.

Nevertheless, her perseverance bore fruit in 2023, when she successfully cleared the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) Group C Examination. Her achievement was a watershed moment, not just for her, but for every disabled individual fighting systemic barriers.

In April 2025, she was officially appointed as a Revenue Assistant at the Nagpur District Collectorate. Her presence in the corridors of government service today serves as a quiet but powerful reminder of inclusion, equality, and triumph.

An Advocate for the Marginalized

Even as she embarks on her career in public service, Mala has not forgotten her roots. She actively advocates for the rights of persons with disabilities, urging governments and institutions to improve accessibility in education, transport, and employment.

She frequently speaks at educational seminars, disability inclusion workshops, and youth forums, encouraging visually impaired students to dream big. Her journey is now part of classroom discussions and motivational lectures across Maharashtra.

The Road Ahead

Mala’s story is far from over. Fuelled by ambition and the desire to serve on a larger platform, she is now preparing for the UPSC Civil Services Examination. Her ultimate goal is to become an IAS officer, where she can influence policy and create systemic change for disadvantaged communities.

Her aspiration is not merely a personal milestone, but a mission—one that seeks to empower the blind, the abandoned, the voiceless.

Legacy of a Fighter

Mala Papalkar’s life is a living testimony to the idea that “disability is not inability.” In her, we find the story of a girl who was discarded by society but embraced by destiny. From railway dustbins to government offices, her journey reflects what is possible when courage is met with compassion and opportunity.

She has become a role model not only for the differently abled but also for anyone who has ever been told they can’t. Her life challenges outdated perceptions of disability and calls to action for a more inclusive, empathetic world.

Mala once said,
“I may not have sight, but I have a vision. And I will continue to walk towards it with my head held high.”

In every sense, she is not just a survivor—she is a torchbearer for millions whose dreams deserve a chance.

Lesser-Known Facts About Mala Papalkar
